Hactivism attacks could rise, warns security expert

In January 2006, Michael Witt was appointed deputy director of the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team within the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division. Network World national correspondent Carolyn Duffy Marsan interviewed Witt about the Estonian cyberattack and its implications for U.S. network managers.

August 25, 2007 - Joe Provo of Southborough, Mass., writes: Mr. Witt is either misrepresenting the history and purpose of NANOG or the quote was poorly edited. Likely he was referring to the NSP-Sec community, which do indeed make up a portion of the NANOG attendees. NANOG meets three times a year and grew directly out of the NSF Regional Techs meeting in the early days on government-funded Internet.

While it is North American in focus there are participants, attendees, speakers, and administrative committee members from across the globe. Security is a non-trivial portion of the NANOG agenda, and folks involved across the spectrum from research to actively mitigating security issues attend. See http://www.nanog.org/ for more, including information on the next meeting in October.
