Peel Region's Wiseman wins Heintzman leadership award

By: Lisa Williams, senior writer, InterGovWorld(04-30-2007)

Lauded as a tireless leader and visionary, Roy Wiseman, CIO of the Region of Peel, is the 2007 recipient of the Heintzman Leadership Award presented yesterday at the Lac Carling Congress at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

The leadership award is presented on behalf of the Institute for Citizen-Centred Service (ICCS) to an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership within the public sector in promoting citizen-centred service.

In addition to being CIO, Wiseman has been director of the Region's Information and Technology Services division since 1986. His past honours include awards of excellence from Showcase Ontario in 2005 and 2006, and a national Technology in Government Distinction Award. He was also the first recipient of the Municipal Information Systems Association's (MISA) Regena Lerke Distinguished Service Award.

At the award presentation, Art Stevenson, director of the ICCS, said that Wiseman had made a great contribution to citizen-centred service. "The jury had a daunting challenge with this selection as we had exceptional nominees from all levels of government," said Stevenson.

Fellow presenter Harry Turnbull, president of MISA Ontario, said Wiseman was one of Canada's most influential and dedicated leaders of citizen-centred services. "His vision, leadership and innovation have made him a highly respected colleague from all levels of government," said Turnbull, who noted that MISA Ontario simply refers to Wiseman as "Mr. MISA."

Wiseman was clearly honoured by the award, and in his acceptance speech to the audience of Lac Carling delegates said, "It's certainly nice to be recognized, and may this happen to each of you over the coming years...It's worth it because we're all committed to what we're doing here."

Unified Communications
Data Defence

Unity is a word often heard in the public sector, with myriad agencies and departments looking to foster collective thinking around some of today's most pressing issues. The word, however, doesn't usually get mentioned in the same breath as technology. That's a situation, though, that might soon be changing, thanks to a new software platform known as unified communications.
