IBM Canada has announced the creation of a Centre of Excellence in Quebec City, the aim of which is to facilitate the international sharing of medical documents between clinics, physicians and hospitals. The exclusive global provider of the solution is Artefact Informatique, a division of LGS Group Inc. (an IBM company).
Barry Burk, vice-president, Healthcare Industry for IBM Canada said in a released statement that the ability to access health information dispersed among diverse organizations is one of the main IT challenges facing today's healthcare providers.
"Standards-based solutions are a crucial factor in answering this challenge," said Burk.
A registry and repository for a wide range of diverse documents including lab reports, digital images, and drug profiles is the aim of the solution. Regardless of where or how originals are stored, authorized healthcare professionals can search, retrieve and view documents from their own jurisdictions (or other jurisdictions).
The system was developed to be integrated easily with electronic health record (EHR) solutions because it is based on open industry standards such as HL7 and XDS, according to IBM.
