The inspector general's office at the U.S. Department of
Transportation disclosed that a laptop PC containing the names,
addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers of 133,000
Florida residents was stolen from a car in Doral, Fla., on July
27.
The inspector general's office said it is taking steps to ensure
that no other portable devices contain personal data and is
tightening its policies regarding the use of laptops.
Massachusetts CIO Louis Gutierrez said Friday that the state's
IT division had laid off 27 contract employees as part of a
shutdown of work on bond-dependent IT projects. The state
legislature ended its session for the year on July 31 without
approving a bond bill that included US$250 million (C$281) for IT
initiatives. Leaders of the Massachusetts House and Senate said
they're working to arrange a special legislative session to address
the bill.
The U.S. Department of Justice is considering a
massive consolidation of its storage systems that would link
devices at more than 2,000 offices and multiple data centers into
an enterprise storage architecture. According to a document
obtained by Computerworld, the DOJ last week began soliciting
vendors "to identify solutions, technologies, and best practices"
for interconnecting its storage infrastructure.
Cisco Systems Inc. said it has invested US$50 million (C$56) in
Nuova Systems Inc., a startup in Santa Clara, Calif., that's
developing unspecified data center products. The deal gives Cisco
an 80 percent stake in Nuova, which will become a majority-owned
subsidiary of the networking giant.
