SOA tops CIOs wish lists

By: Len Rust, Computerworld Australia(Apr 01, 2008 01:00:00)

According to IDC's Forecast for Management (FFM) Survey, half of responding CIOs have SOA in their 2008 budgets. "This is interesting as many IT industry participants first saw SOA as another standards and application development paradigm wave that would just fade away," said Melissa Martin, an analyst with IDC Australia.

"Virtualization is another of the top technologies that CIOs will be investing in this year. This is no surprise as CIOs are now on the journey to enable their environments to be as flexible and future proofed as possible. SOA and virtualization technologies are enablers that can support these objectives," added Martin.

In 2008, CIO investment dollars will focus on improving internal business/technology processes, business reporting and information management, infrastructure, and communicating with partners, suppliers and customers.

IDC's survey revealed the top 10 technologies or management disciplines to be in use by CIOs in Australia and New Zealand by 2009 as:

-- Services-oriented architecture (SOA), Web services -- forecast to change in use from 2007 to the start of 2009 by 141 per cent
-- Radio frequency ID tags -- 122 per cent
-- Voice and/or voice-over-IP -- 97 per cent
-- IT services quality certification -- 86 per cent
-- Virtualization (eg, VMWare, etc) -- 75 per cent
-- Storage-over- IP and/or iSCSI -- 72 per cent
-- Sales force automation tools and marketing management -- 66 per cent
-- Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) -- 65 per cent
-- Document management -- 63 per cent
-- Online exchanges/marketplaces/portals -- 63 per cent

Unified Communications
Data Defence

Unity is a word often heard in the public sector, with myriad agencies and departments looking to foster collective thinking around some of today's most pressing issues. The word, however, doesn't usually get mentioned in the same breath as technology. That's a situation, though, that might soon be changing, thanks to a new software platform known as unified communications.
