In case you haven't heard, information technology is going "green" - or at least making the attempt. In a perfect world, we'd all be motivated to do our part, but a considerable amount of evidence suggests green is far from top-of-mind for many IT purchasers. In truth, many business and IT professionals couldn't care less about green.

The nature of IT demands clarity, and that's particularly important in requests for proposals. Unfortunately, in today's hurried world, few people take the time to make specifications clear. But fuzzy requirements create misunderstandings. They cost time, money, effort and sometimes political capital. But while RFPs are expensive to produce and review, clarity will save you money.

Ontariobs Information and Privacy Commissioner has released a five-point security checklist for wireless video surveillance systems, following a freak drive-by interception of a wireless transmission at a health clinic that showed a patient providing a urine sample. Ann Cavoukianbs office has also made available a fact sheet on the Commissionerbs official Web site to further increase awareness among health-care providers about wireless video surveillance.

The Smart Systems for Health Agency has announced an agreement to use broadband network infrastructure from Hydro One Telecom as the new core for its province-wide system, which hospitals and health clinics can plug into for sharing information electronically. The agency says the new system should both improve health care and help to better protect patient information privacy.

Canadian government IT executives recognize that data disorder in the public sector is unsustainable, but no one province has all the necessary resources to tackle all the issues. Instead of working in isolation, a new sub-committee has been formed to develop common standards and guidelines across all levels of government.

The smartcard paradigm will result in better and more secure access to government services across jurisdictions, according to the Australian Federal Special Minister of State, Gary Nairn. In Sydney to speak at this year's Australian Smart Cards Summit, Nairn said building "communities of interest" would stimulate interoperability, which in turn would pave the way for more government use of smartcards.
