Microsoft Corp.'s plan to fill its mammoth Chicago data centre with servers housed in 40-foot shipping containers has experts wondering whether the strategy will succeed. In Microsoft's plan, each container in the data centre, still being built, will be filled with several thousand servers.

Following a spate of high profile data breaches, the U.S. Ministry of Defence is set to install encryption software on 20,000 of its laptops. It will install BeCrypt's Disk Baseline software across Royal Airforce, Army and Navy laptops, and users will need to be authenticated before they can access encrypted data.

Africa requires 1.3 million networking professionals by 2012 for technology in the region to operate effectively, according to a Cisco official. South Africa-based Cisco Systems area academic manager Elfie Hamid said in Lusaka, Zambia, recently that Africa is facing a massive shortage of ICT, both in industry and training institutions.

Instead of starting from scratch, the IT industry needs to benchmark and copy best practice methodology, according to Government CIO John Suffolk. In a wide-ranging keynote at Green IT 08 conference in London, Suffolk lambasted the IT industry for not recording and following best practice when it comes to infrastructure design.

Canada's National Department of Defence (DND) has implemented an integrated equipment and engineering maintenance approach to their services and equipment acquisitions, according to Kevin Radford of the DND. Radford, director of materiel for policy and procedures at the DND, spoke to delegates at SAP's Sapphire Conference in Orlando, Florida, about why it was so urgent for the department to take an integrated approach.

New Brunswick Power has improved their customer service centre through streamlining data and focusing on change management, according to NB Power's Jill Feero. "We're introducing a whole new line of products and we can't afford to jeopardize our reputation and the need to meet our customer's needs," said Feero in a presentation at SAP's Sapphire 2008 conference in Orlando, Florida

Over 600 staff at the U.K. HM Revenue and Customs agency have been disciplined or fired in a three year period after they accessed sensitive data without authorization. Jane Kennedy, financial secretary to the Treasury, said the staff were either given a warning or were sacked following "inappropriate access to personal or sensitive data".
