Local government and commercial software vendors with expertise in inventory asset management and public sector business processes are working hand-in-hand to develop effective solutions to prepare for the introduction of the new legislation.

The Ontario Public Service's Justice cluster will explore the possibility of instituting an electronic warrant (e-warrant) system across the province, according to its CIO John DiMarco. The Justice cluster has just completed a pilot project for the e-warrant system, in which a justice of the peace is able to issue police search warrants electronically through the use of electronic signatures, DiMarco told attendees at a recent breakfast forum held in Toronto hosted by the Information Technology Association of Canada.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency can provide a good example for corporate CIOs on how to handle electronic records by not doing what the CIA had done. Recent reports that the CIA destroyed videotapes of interrogations of two terrorist suspects may be a case in point and a timely reminder for CIOs tasked with electronic evidence preservation rules since last December.

Following the deployment of its 3-1-1 telephone access to city services and programs, The City of Calgary has implemented a similar approach to provide HR-related services and information to 16,000 city employees. Dubbed HR Service Centre, the initiative gives city workers one phone number to call for HR-related issues and questions, said Gilles Champagne, manager of enterprise support systems with The City of Calgary.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation is investing nearly $28 million to fund research in 35 universities and colleges across the country, comprising 139 research projects in various areas including information and communications technologies and environmental science, according to a statement issued by CFI.

Environment Canada is using an open source model for its Model of the Environment and Temperature of Roads (METRo) forecasting system, in an effort to help provide the community of meteorologists and road maintainers with accurate forecasting software. The system has recently been freely distributed by Environment Canada under General Public Licence.

Many IT organizations working to improve IT service delivery and management processes depend on ITIL best practices, but the framework isn't always seen as the panacea adopters expected. New survey results show that 51 per cent of respondents use ITIL, but more (55 per cent) depend upon in-house developed practices to tweak processes.
