Cheap and plentiful data storage can be both a blessing and a curse. It creates the illusion there is infinite space available for data on networks. This intensifies human pack-rat tendencies to hoard data instead of evaluating what's really needed. All this accumulating data has impacts far beyond storage costs, cascading into all aspects of IT operations and management.

Edmonton is an oddity. It is one of the few cities in North America that is systematically tackling public engagement. In 2005, the City started up the Office of Public Involvement (OPI) to reshape the dynamics of municipal politics. "The overall goal is to change the culture of the city so that public involvement becomes a part of our day-to-day business," says coordinator Jill Bradford-Green.

The City of Mississauga, Ont., has implemented an IP telephony system from Cisco Systems Inc. throughout the municipality's 78 facilities, as well as Cisco's IPCC product suite in its central call centre. While upgrading Mississauga's telecom system to VoIP was based on hard dollar returns, higher service levels proved a compelling driver in its own right to put VoIP into the call centre.

IT systems are proving to be a huge relief for overburdened U.S. hospital emergency departments. After The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York implemented an emergency department information system, it went from 5,000 lost or illegible charts in 2003 to none in 2005, a year after it moved from paper to electronic charts.

E-mail inboxes at the City of Richmond, B.C., are a lot less cluttered with unwanted spam since implementing a combined messaging and security system. The new system is based on MailChannels' Traffic Control and Cloudmark Authority's anti-spam, anti-phishing and anti-virus protection technology.
